Friday’s
Pre-season Testing at Firebird International Raceway
By Jim Kelso

Under warm and sunny skies, pre-season testing began at Firebird
International Raceway just outside if Phoenix. While most cars ran
60-foot and 330-foot passes several cars made impressive quarter-mile
runs. In Top Fuel Clay Millican was the quickest with a 4.548 at 319.60
MPH. The U.S. Army car of three-time NHRA World Champion Tony Schumacher
clicked it early running a 4.670 at 240.81MPH. Whit Bazemore is getting
used to his new MATCO Tools sponsored Top Fuel car while attempting to
cross over his license from Funny Car before the start of the season.
Doug Kalitta had a most unusual situation as he launched his Mac Tools
Dragster, the car went into wheelie, causing Kalitta to back-pedal, and
then the rear tires lifted off the pavement resulting in an aborted
pass.(See photos below)
In Funny Car teammates Ron Capps, Gary
Scelzi and “Fast” Jack Beckman, led the field with 4.762, 4.769 and
4.946 elapsed times. Kenny Bernstein and his Monster Energy Drink funny
Car tried to sort things out, while needing to acquire his funny car
license before being able to compete at the NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts
Winternationals.
Testing continues on Saturday here at Firebird
International Raceway.
