2005 Interviews

Schumacher Scelzi and Anderson top fields in final day of qualifying at CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals

Photos by Jim Kelso, Les Welch and Joel Gelfand

Tony Schumacher led the quickest Top Fuel field in history, qualifying in the final session Saturday with a 4.472/331.36-mph pass. “Hot Rod” Fuller was bumped to second, qualifying with an ultra-quick 4.481/329.75, followed by Brandon Bernstein (4.494/331.61), and Doug Kalitta (4.495/328.46). Joe Hartley capped the 16th spot at 4.575/322.34-mph. Bob Vandergriff did a great job of driving after losing a front wheel just past the finish line, and was able to bring his UPS sponsored dragster to a safe stop.
The excitement continued in Funny Car when John Force, who was not in the field going into the final session, clocked a 4.709 elapsed time, good for number two for the time being, bumping out daughter Ashley in the process. Ashley followed John and got back into the field with a 4.790 ET. Gary Scelzi moved to the number one spot with a 4.692/333.49mph, leading the quickest Funny Car field in NHRA history!
In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson was at the top of the heap when all was said and done at 6.634 ET, with a track record 209.04mph. Allen Johnson was a strong number two followed closely by the 2006 Pro Stock World Champion Jason Line. Richie Stevens put his Mopar in the last spot with a very quick 6.683/206.83-mph. Sunday eliminations promise to be very exciting if weather permits.
