The Team Mopar Funny Car gang of Gary Scelzi, Ron Capps,
and Jack Beckman picked up right where they left off in 2006,
dominating the National Time Trials test session at Firebird Raceway in
Phoenix, taking three of the top four quickest elapsed times.
Capps, part of the Don Schumacher Racing trio that combined for seven
NHRA POWERade Funny Car victories in 2006, posted the best elapsed time
(4.678-second pass at 325.92 mph) of the three-day test session in his
Brut Revolution Dodge Charger R/T. Scelzi notched the top-speed during
testing with a 332.92 mph run in his Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T, which
sported a new puzzle-themed paint scheme. Beckman debuted the paint scheme
of new sponsor Mail Terminal Services on his Dodge Charger R/T with good
results, posting an impressive Saturday pass of 4.736 at 327.43 mph. The
three drivers will open the season February 8-11 at the NHRA
Winternationals in Pomona, California.
"One word sums it up: Exciting," said Scelzi of his outing. "We're very
pleased and we're very excited about going to Pomona, but we're going to
stay one more day to get some of the new crew guys up to speed a little
bit more, because it's going to be hectic going rounds. And the
Mopar/Oakley Dodge hopes to be going a lot of rounds this year."
"This weekend was great," said Capps. "I always wanted to be on the
National Dragster cover, because the quickest guys at the Phoenix test got
on the cover. I don't know if they still do it, but it was always
something to shoot for when I first started driving."
