Ron Capps saw his string of four straight finals finishes snapped this
week, but still maintains a healthy lead in points in the NHRA Funny Car
division. |
Scelzi Advances to Quarterfinals in Tough Weekend for Mopar
Funny Car DriversGary Scelzi and the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger team advanced to
the second round of eliminations in the 26th Annual Summit Racing
Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Raceway to bring them into
11th-place in the NHRA POWERade Funny Car Series points race. Scelzi found
the groove in qualifying, laying down a best run of 4.744/328.78 to
qualify in the fifth position entering Sunday's action. Defeating Scott
Kalitta in the first round with a 4.709/326.40, Scelzi had what appeared
to be an easy victory over Eric Medlen's disabled machine when his car
crossed the center line disqualifying him from the event.
Series points leader Ron Capps also faced a rough Sunday, as the
Brut Dodge Stratus team failed to make it into the second round of
eliminations. Losing to Cruz Pedregon's 4.753/326.87, Capps laid down a
second round effort of 4.972/321.96. The defeat also ended Capps' string
of consecutive final round appearances, as he had five on the season and
four in a row leading into the Atlanta event. The Don Schumacher Racing
team continues to lead the NHRA POWERade Funny Car Series points chase as
they move on to Columbus, Ohio, in two weeks.
Whit Bazemore and the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger team
also made the cut in qualifying to transfer into the eliminations rounds
for the weekend. Qualifying strongly in the eighth position, Bazemore's
best qualifying effort was 4.780/304.25. Facing Tony Pedregon in the first
round, Bazemore's 4.774/320.05 wasn't able to outrun Pedregon's
4.765/326.56 effort. The Don Schumacher Racing team will enter the next
event at National Trail Raceway ranked eighth in the POWERade Funny Car
Series points chase.

Johnson Makes Quarterfinals at AtlantaAllen Johnson and the J&J Racing team found the remedy to
their first round slump this weekend, as the Mopar/Dodge Stratus R/T team
made it to the second round of NHRA Pro Stock Series eliminations at
Atlanta Raceway in the 26th Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern
Nationals. Johnson qualified sixth with a best effort of 6.726/204.32 to
place himself in the top half of the field for the first time this season.
Defeating Rickie Smith in the first round of eliminations, Johnson battled
tough track conditions in his second round loss to Dave Connolly. The
event marked the team's best event of the season to date.
The Don Schumacher Racing duo of Richie Stevens Jr., and
Shaun Carlson continued to gain ground in their 2006 NHRA Pro Stock
Series campaign. Under the new leadership of David Nickens and clutch
specialist Mike Sullivan, the team was able to isolate electrical and
mechanical issues that will be addressed. Carlson was 16th after the first
round of qualifying on Friday, but the team was sidelined when the Team
Mopar/SRT Dodge Stratus R/T lost electrical power at the line in their
last qualifying attempt. Stevens Jr., also failed to qualify for the
event, breaking a 29-race streak of Pro Stock competition. The Team
Mopar/Valspar/Dodge Stratus R/T team battled the tricky track throughout
the weekend, resulting in respectable passes that will give the team
ground to gain on.
The NHRA Pro Stock Series will resume action on May 18-21 in the
Pontiac Performance NHRA Nationals at National Trail Raceway in Columbus,
Ohio. For more information regarding Stevens Jr., Carlson or the NHRA
POWERade Drag Racing Series, log on to shoeracing.com, allenjohnson.com or
