"This is a great win. It gives me a little breathing room in the points
battle. We've had awesome finishes in the first three events, and we need
to keep the momentum going. With the amount of talent we have to compete
against, no points lead is safe until the season is over."
—Samuel Hubinette, on his win at the Round 3 Formula D event held near
Chicago's Soldier Field. |
Windy City Win Keeps Hubinette in Points Lead Chicago again proved to be Team Mopar driver Samuel Hubinette's
kind of town, as the "Crazy Swede" scored his second victory of the season
in Round 3 Formula D action held near Soldier Field. Hubinette, who won
the inaugural event at Chicago in 2005, has made the final round in all
three Formula D events this season. He increased his series points lead to
42 markers over his nearest competitor, Rhys Millen.
Qualifying his NuFormz Racing Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10 sixth, Hubinette
defeated Conrad Grunewald and Calvin Wan to advance to the semis for a
match-up against Vaughn Gittin Jr. After a one more time, the crowd
favored Hubinette, and so did the judges, sending him on to the final
round against Millen. The win was Hubinette's third against Gittin Jr.
this year.
The final round proved to be dramatic, as water from the concessions
stand leaked out onto the most pivotal part of the track, undetected by
Formula D and Hubinette. With Hubinette following Millen in the first
tandem run, the water caused Hubinette to spin. The judges ruled a do-over
and cleared the water off the course.
On the do-over run, both Hubinette and Millen skillfully mastered their
way around the track, setting up an exciting final pass. This time, with
Millen following Hubinette, Millen spun out in his feint entry into the
horseshoe turn. After review, the judges requested another do-over, ruling
that Hubinette had been more than one car length ahead at the pace cone,
but Millen graciously conceded, giving Hubinette his second win and third
podium finish in three events.
"I really, really feel that this is one of my hottest spots on the
tour," Hubinette said. "The fans were really supporting the Mopar brand,
myself and our fellow sponsors, such as BFGoodrich. They were cheering and
screaming, and that helped me feel good about every run."
Next up for Hubinette and the NuFormz Racing team is Round 4 Formula D
action at Sonoma, Calif., scheduled for July 8. For more info on Hubinette
or Formula D, log on to samuelhubinette.com or formulad.com. |
Team Mopar Sweeps Podium, Wise Takes Pole at Lake Ozark
SpeedwayTeam Mopar's efforts in last Friday night's USAC National Midget Car
Series event produced winning results, as Jerry Coons Jr., Josh
Wise and Levi Jones made it an all-Mopar podium in victory
lane. The Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises and Wilke-PAK Motorsports teams
earned top honors in the series' appearance at Lake Ozark Speedway in
Missouri.
Coons Jr., qualified the No. 11 third quick. Having led laps 4-22, he
surrendered the lead briefly to Jones before reclaiming the top position
for good on lap 24. Coons Jr.'s victory was highlighted by his position as
the USAC National Midget Car Series points leader.
Wise and Jones posted their best USAC National Midget Car Series
finishes in the event, driving the No. 20 and No. 21 machines to a second-
and third-place finish. Wise also earned fast qualifier honors for the
night. Jones also led lap 23 of the feature event for Tony Stewart Racing
Enterprises. The duo's performances brought them into the Top-10 in the
series points chase, with Wise ranked eighth and Jones currently 10th.
Ganassi Racing development driver Bryan Clauson also competed
for Keith Kunz Motorsports. He won the second heat race event en route to
a ninth-place feature event finish. Kyle Nicholas also competed for
Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises. He finished eighth in the semi-feature
event.
The USAC National Midget Car Series will resume action on July 1 at
Indianapolis Raceway Park. For more information regarding USAC Racing, log

Earns PoleTeam Mopar picked up a victory, a Top-five finish and two Top-10
finishes in USAC National Sprint Car Series competition at Lake Ozark
Speedway in Missouri on Friday night. Jerry Coons Jr., made a sweep
of the night, winning the sprint car portion of the doubleheader for
Hoffman Auto Racing to follow up his midget series win earlier in the
night.
Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises' Josh Wise and Levi Jones
dominated qualifying, as Jones earned fast time honors for the night. Wise
timed in second behind Jones. Jones took the checkered flag in fourth
place, followed by Wise in seventh position.

10th. The event will be completed on August 27.

Stevens Qualifies No. 1, Advances to Semis at
Chi-townRichie Stevens Jr., didn't need help from the famed Chicago
winds to power his Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus R/T to the No. 1
qualifier spot at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals over the weekend.
All he needed was HEMI power, and it nearly took him all the way to his
first win of the season.
Stevens Jr. qualified No. 1 with a track-record breaking and career
best 6.635 second pass at 207.40 mph, earning his first pole of the year
in what was the second quickest run in Pro Stock history. He knocked off
Steve Schmidt and Jason Line before losing to defending NHRA POWERade Pro
Stock champ Greg Anderson after red-lighting. Stevens Jr. also advanced to
the semis in the King Demon Crown NHRA bonus event.
"Having (crew chief) David Nickens, Terry Adams (assistant crew chief),
and Mike Sullivan (clutch specialist) here is kind of like John Force's
team with three crew chiefs - all very intelligent and working together,"
said Stevens. "David has done his homework in the engine department, and
we are just going to get stronger from here."
Allen Johnson qualified his Mopar J & J Racing Dodge Stratus
R/T fourth, then defeated Ron Krisher before losing to Anderson in the
quarterfinals. He has reached at least the quarters in the past four
events. Johnson's Team Mopar teammate Shaun Carlson posted his
quickest ET yet, with a pass of 6.708 at 204.70 mph. The excellent pass
wasn't good enough for Carlson to qualify his Don Schumacher Racing Team
Mopar/SRT Dodge Stratus R/T, however, in the quickest field in Pro Stock
history.
The Pro Stock trio will next compete at this weekend's K&N Filters
SuperNationals at Englishtown, NJ. Qualifying coverage can be seen on
ESPN2 this Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with finals coverage set for
Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more info on Stevens Jr., Carlson,
Johnson or the NHRA, log on to shoeracing.com, allenjohnson.com or nhra.com. |

"We qualified great and have obviously turned things around here for
the better. We went three rounds and that is the first time we've done
that in a long time [2005 U.S. Nationals, final round], so we can't hang
our heads."
—Richie Stevens Jr., on his performance over the weekend, which was his
first semifinal appearance since he advanced to the final round at last
year's U.S. Nationals. |

"No matter what the temperature is in Englishtown [the next event], I
think we're good. We ran well in Topeka in the heat, ran [well] here in
the cold. We still didn't get quite what we wanted out of it here, but it
was getting better."
—Gary Scelzi, on the encouragement he feels after scoring a semifinals
appearance at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals over the
weekend. |
Scelzi Goes to Semis in ChicagoTeam Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing's Gary Scelzi continued to
rebound from early season struggles, as the reigning NHRA POWERade Drag
Racing Series Funny Car champion advanced to the semis at the CARQUEST
Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Scelzi moved up to eighth
in points and is only 89 markers out of fifth place.
Driving the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car, Scelzi defeated
Mike Ashley and Tommy Johnson Jr. on his way to a semifinal match up
against John Force Racing's Robert Hight. The spectacular side-by-side
contest saw Hight edge out Scelzi by a mere seven inches. The pair swapped
the lead twice down the quarter-mile, but it was Hight first at the finish
with a 4.700/330.55 to Scelzi's 4.720/332.10. Scelzi's rocket ship Charger
tuned by Mike "Zippy" Neff earned its 23rd Funny Car top speed since
Scelzi joined Don Schumacher Racing in 2003.
"You know what," said Scelzi, "the car's been improving every race and
I'm improving every race. Our Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger is ready to win.
I think it proved it today."
Mopar and DSR teammate Ron Capps had a tough weekend in his Brut
Dodge Charger R/T. Capps, who qualified 12th and experienced mechanical
gremlins the entire event, defeated Cruz Pedregon, but exited in the
quarterfinals round at the hands of Robert Hight. Teammate Whit
Bazemore set a career best ET (4.674 seconds) in qualifying second,
but a freak parts failure ended the day of the Matco Tools Iron Eagle
Dodge Charger Funny Car team in the first round. Capps maintained the top
spot in the Funny Car field with a 48-point lead over the second-place
John Force; Bazemore is seventh in the points standings.
Next up is this weekends K&N Filters SuperNationals at Englishtown,
NJ. Qualifying coverage can be seen on ESPN2 this Saturday from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m., with finals coverage set for Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more
info on Capps, Scelzi, Bazemore or the NHRA, log on to shoeracing.com or nhra.com. |

Steve Francis placed 13th in "The Dream" at Eldora Speedway over the
weekend. Francis' car carried a variation of the midnight camo paint
scheme that Team Mopar's NHRA Pro Stock and USAC racing teams are
competing with this season. |
Francis Sports Mopar Midnight Camo Paint Scheme at 'The
Dream'Steve Francis and the No. 15 team earned a 13th place finish in
"The Dream" at Eldora Speedway over the weekend. The event, which featured
148 of the toughest late model competitors from all over the country, is
one of the biggest late model events of the season. Francis and the No. 15
team drove to a second place finish in the sixth heat race to earn a
starting spot in the talent-deep field. "The Dream" paid a $100,000 purse
to the winner of the prestigious event.
Francis also played the role of car-owner for a special guest earlier
in the week. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series star Ryan Newman was slated to drive
the No. 15 in the NEXTEL "Prelude to the Dream" event at Eldora Speedway
on June 7. Track owner Tony Stewart began the event in 2005, inviting
several of NASCAR's biggest stars to compete at his legendary half-mile
dirt track facility. This year's event was postponed by heavy rain and
will be run on September 6.
The No. 15 machine that Francis drove and Newman was to compete with
was adorned with a special "midnight camo" paint scheme. The scheme is a
variation of the design that Team Mopar's NHRA Pro Stock and USAC racing
teams are competing with this season. Francis will continue to run the
paint scheme in several World of Outlaws Late Model Series events this
season.
Francis and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will resume action
on June 16 at Western Kentucky Lake Speedway. For more information

Hubinette to Appear on 'Geraldo at Large' TV Program Mopar and Samuel Hubinette will hit the nation's airwaves
tonight, as the "Crazy Swede" was filmed over the weekend at the Formula D
Chicago event for a segment that will appear on Fox News Networks "Geraldo

on the sport of drifting, which is receiving major mainstream media
coverage leading up to this Friday's wide release of Universal Picture's

the passenger seat of the Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10 for two runs on the
Chicago course.
"We knew it was only a matter time before drifting blew up and received
coverage in the mainstream," said Hubinette. "It seems like all the hard
work we've been doing for two seasons to promote the sport is paying
off."
