2005 Interviews

"Pro Stock is the toughest class. The top six racers all went out in round one and the No. 7 car wasn't racing today. You see it every week; you have to be perfect to win one of these things. We're excited and we feel like we have the confidence to run on these hot tracks."

—Allen Johnson, quoted from nhra.com, on his win at the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals. The victory was Johnson's first since the 2005 Phoenix event.

Johnson Scores
First 2006 Win in
Mopar Sweep at Seattle

Allen Johnson's J & J Racing Team Mopar Dodge Stratus R/T has been dialed in as of late, with two No. 1 qualifier poles on the season, yet the Team Mopar veteran had been unable to translate his newfound horsepower into a victory. That all changed at the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals in scorching Seattle over the weekend, as Johnson powered his way to his first Wally trophy since the 2005 Phoenix event. Joined with Whit Bazemore's Funny Car win and Tony Schumacher's victory in his Hemi-powered U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, Johnson's triumph gave Mopar Hemi power a clean sweep of the top three pro classes in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Johnson qualified third, and then sent home Mike Edwards, Greg Stanfield and Warren Johnson before knocking off Tom Martino in the final with a pass of 6.767 at 204.63 mph. Johnson and the J & J Racing team, led by crew chief, co-owner and father, Roy Johnson, leaped from tenth to seventh in the NHRA Pro Stock point standings.

"We've had the best car for the last four races ... so this isn't a big surprise to me," Johnson said on nhra.com. "We've struggled a little with our race day tune-up and we especially stubbed our toe in Denver in the first round, but that mistake really taught us what we needed to know to get down these hot, gummy racetracks."

Johnson was nearly joined in the final by the Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus R/T of Richie Stevens Jr., who advanced to the semifinals for the second time this season with wins over Jim Yates and Max Naylor. Stevens Jr., exited at the hands of Martino, but not before he also jumped three spots in the Pro Stock standings, from twelfth to ninth. Stevens Jr.'s Don Schumacher Racing teammates, Erica Enders and Shaun Carlson, failed to make the unforgiving Pro Stock field.

Next up for the Mopar Pro Stockers is the Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., this weekend. For more info on the NHRA, log on to nhra.com.

Bazemore Edges Out Capps
in All-Mopar Final at Seattle

In a weekend that saw Mopar power sweep all three of the top pro classes in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Whit Bazemore and Team Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps went head-to-head in the NHRA Funny Car final round at the Schuck's Auto Supply NHRA Nationals in Seattle.

The 129-degree track temperature couldn't match the heat pumped out by the DSR duo. Bazemore took the win in his Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger R/T, while runner-up Capps widened his Funny Car points lead over the second-place John Force.

Before meeting Capps in the final, Bazemore dispatched of Phil Burkart Jr., Tony Bartone and Tony Pedregon. Capps' path to the final saw him take round wins in his Brut Dodge Charger R/T over Del Worsham, teammate Gary Scelzi, and Eric Medlen. Scelzi's quarterfinals loss to Capps came after the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T driver had knocked off Force, helping Capps in his hunt for the Funny Car championship. The winner at the previous event, the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, Scelzi is now sixth in the points battle, only one point out of the fifth spot.

Bazemore posted a better reaction time than Capps in grabbing his first win of the season (.060 to Capps' .092), as well as a better pass (5.036 at 309.42 mph to Capps' 5.108 at 293.15). Bazemore is eighth in the Funny Car points standings, with Capps in first with an 88-marker lead over Force.

"When you have a (losing) streak like we had, you just have to suck it up," said Bazemore. "It's just a matter of trying to be perfect on race day in the car, controlling what you can control, and staying very positive, and that's what our team did."

The event was a resounding success for Don Schumacher Racing, as the DSR team took home two class wins. Tony Schumacher grabbed a win in Top Fuel in his Hemi-powered U.S. Army dragster, and with Allen Johnson's Pro Stock win, Mopar power swept the top three classes at Seattle.

The Mopar Funny Car drivers will look to make it three wins a row in this weekend's Fram-Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. For more info on the NHRA, log on to nhra.com.

"It's a great day. Just to get back in the winner's circle feels so good, especially for the team. It really is a team sport and to suffer like we have, to be less than perfect and for the team to basically rebuild itself over the past two or three months and to come out and run well and still not get the results-which has been the case for the last four or five races-to finally get the result is a great feeling. And well deserved for the guys on the team."

After finishing second in the Gas City I-69 race, Levi Jones' bid for the Indiana Sprint Week title was hurt by Mother Nature, as the last two races in the event were canceled due to rain. Jones finished second in the overall Indiana Sprint Week championship and currently leads the USAC National Sprint Car Series point standings, with teammate Josh Wise a close second.

Jones Second in
Indiana Sprint Week,
Leads Points Chase

Mother Nature halted Levi Jones' and the No. 21 Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises team's roll toward the USAC National Sprint Car Series Indiana Sprint Week title, as the final two events of the series were washed out. Jones had moved into second position in the special event points chase heading into the canceled events at Lawrenceburg Speedway and Terre Haute Action Track. The No. 21 team had picked up steam at Gas City I-69 raceway on July 19, as Jones took second place in the feature event. USAC elected not to schedule rain dates for the two final events, crowning Jon Stanborough the Indiana Sprint Week Champion. Jones ended the series in second place.

Hoffman Auto Racing's Jerry Coons Jr., drove to a 10th-place finish at Gas City Speedway to earn fourth position in the Indiana Sprint Week points chase. Ganassi Racing development driver Bryan Clauson earned an eighth-place finish on Wednesday night to lock up fifth place in the Sprint Week points standings. Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises' Josh Wise battled to a 13th-place finish at Gas City, ahead of Darren Hagen, who finished 17th.

Jones leads the USAC National Sprint Car Series point standings, as the series heads into Tri-City Speedway on August 6. Wise follows closely in second place, with Clauson ranked third. Hagen is currently ranked sixth in the points chase, with Coons, Jr., in seventh.

Coons Jr. Widens Points
Lead With Sixth at Milwaukee

Team Mopar battled through a tough weekend in USAC National Midget Car Series competition at the Milwaukee Mile over the weekend, to post solid finishes and maintain the series points lead. Jerry Coons Jr., and the No. 11 Wilke-PAK Motorsports team moved through the field to earn a sixth-place finish in the feature event. Coons Jr., was able to extend his series points lead with a strong run over the weekend.

Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises' Levi Jones and Josh Wise also battled their way through the event, after struggling in qualifying. Jones drove to an 11th-place finish in the feature event, while Wise was credited with a 24th-place finish after losing a power steering pump in the early laps of the event. Jones is currently ranked eighth in USAC National Midget Car Series points. Brad Kuhn also competed in the event, scoring a 22nd-place finish in the feature. Kuhn is currently ranked seventh in the series points chase.

Coons Jr., will lead the series into 81 Speedway on July 25, as the series moves to the country's heartland for the week. The Mopar Belleville Midget Nationals will wrap up the week on July 28 - 29.

Mopar Fans Flock
to SRT Nationals

The cornfields of Kansas had a little company over the weekend, as a throng of DaimlerChrysler's SRT (Street and Racing Technology) vehicles blew into the Heartland Park Topeka track for the third annual SRT Nationals. From drag racing activities, to autocross competition, to a car show, Mopar enthusiasts made the most of the four-day event.

The Mopar Speedshop was on hand, as were a number of DaimlerChrysler show vehicles. Event sponsor Kicker Car Audio also displayed a rig, along with show cars. Owners of Dodge Chargers, Dodge SRT4s, Chrysler 300Cs and Jeep Grand Cherokees, just to name a few of the vehicle brands represented at the event, did battle on the drag strip and on the autocross, in a variety of classes. Car show awards were also presented to the top three cars in each class.

Several pro racers, including Bob Woodhouse and Cindy Lutz in their race Vipers, and Mike Crawford of Darrel Cox Racing, in his SRT4, were on hand for demos. Vendors raffled off items, including a number from Mopar, such as the SRT4 Turbo Stage 3 Package. The Shelby Dodge Auto Club also held their 16th annual event in conjunction with the SRT Nationals.

"It's an enthusiast event, for enthusiasts and by enthusiasts," said Dale Seeley, organizer of the event and owner of a Dodge SRT4, which he has raced in the One Lap of America. "It's a fun, safe place for enthusiasts to be among friends and to use their cars the way they were meant to be used."
