Richie Stevens Jr., holds his trophy after gaining the win in the
ACDelco NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stevens
Jr., won for the second time in the last four races.
Richie Stevens Jr., (near lane) and Allen Johnson meet in a first-round
match up during the ACDelco NHRA Nationals. Stevens Jr., who recently
joined forces with Johnson's J & J Racing team, scored the round win
and captured the overall event win as well. |
Stevens Jrs Leavin Las Vegas With Second Win of
Season Richie Stevens Jr., made his own luck in Las Vegas on Sunday at
the ACDelco NHRA Nationals, as the Team Mopar Pro Stocker scorched the
lights with a jaw-dropping .002 reaction time, giving him a holeshot win
over the newly-crowned NHRA Pro Stock champ Jason Line in the final round.
Stevens Jr.'s second win of the season came during a weekend that saw
Mopar Hemi power also triumph in the NHRA Funny Car (Jack Beckman) and
NHRA Top Fuel (Tony Schumacher) divisions.
Stevens Jr., overcame a qualifying effort at The Strip at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway in which he placed next to last at 15th in his Don
Schumacher Racing/J & J Racing Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus R/T.
Unfortunately, his first-round win came at the expense of the man who has
helped him catch fire in recent weeks, Allen Johnson. Despite a
slower reaction time than AJ, who qualified his Team Mopar J & J
Racing Dodge Stratus R/T No. 2, Stevens Jr., held on to advance after
Johnson experienced problems and pushed in the clutch.
It was another battle of the Mopars in the second round, as Stevens
Jr., dealt a loss to Larry Morgan and his ZMax Dodge Stratus R/T
team. He posted a stellar .007 reaction time in his defeat of Morgan, and
matched that time with another .007 in his semifinals victory over Dave
Connolly. Stevens Jr.'s finals win over Line came with a pass of 6.789 at
202.85 mph. The victory was his sixth career win and his second in four
races since teaming with J & J Racing's Allen and Roy Johnson.
"We've got something that works with Roy and Allen," said Stevens Jr.
"They have really showed that they can step forward and put this car where
it needs to be. They've done a hell of a job with the power and supplying
it to us, and my crew has been great. It has finally rebounded to where it
should be, and it shows."
The Mopar Pro Stockers will look to continue their recent winning ways
at the upcoming season finale in the Automobile Club of Southern
California NHRA Finals, scheduled for November 9-12 in Pomona, Calif. For

Beckman Beats the Odds With Vegas Victory
Jack Beckman piloted his Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Charger
R/T to an unlikely win on Sunday at the ACDelco NHRA Nationals, visiting
victory lane only days after the Team Mopar driver celebrated his two-year
mark in recovery from lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the immune system.
Beckman's win also remarkable in that it came in only his fourth career
NHRA Funny Car start.
Beckman qualified fourth at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and
vanquished Gary Densham, Del Worsham, Tony Bartone and Tommy Johnson Jr.,
in the run to his first NHRA Wally trophy. The victory is the eighth this
year for a Don Schumacher Racing and Mopar Hemi-powered Funny Car.
"I've always kind of thought to myself, you want to be a dignified
loser, you want to be a dignified winner," said Beckman, who underwent six
months of chemotherapy in his successful battle to beat his cancer. "It
kind of went out the door when the roof hatch opened down there at the
other end. To do something like this has been a dream of mine for
thirty-three years, since I was seven, and I first got taken to a drag
strip. And it's something that you want very much."
Vegas luck eluded Beckman's Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing teammates.
Ron Capps and his Brut Revolution Dodge Charger R/T team exited in
the first round, losing a close one to Scott Kalitta. Capps, second in the
NHRA Funny Car points standings, lost ground to points leader John Force
but remains in the title hunt entering the final event in Pomona. Gary
Scelzi failed to drive his Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T to a
first-round win, losing to Tony Pedregon, and Mike Ashley bowed out
in his Skull Racing Gear Dodge Charger R/T, exiting at the hands of
Worsham in a first-round match.
Combined with Richie Stevens Jr.'s Pro Stock win and Tony Schumacher's
Top Fuel victory, Don Schumacher Racing and Mopar Hemi-power took wins in
three of the top four NHRA divisions. The Mopar Funny Car foursome will
end the season at the upcoming Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA
Finals, scheduled for November 9-12 in Pomona, Calif. For more info on the

"I had a lot of help from my teammates at DSR. And it really is a team.
It's a business enterprise, but there really is a sense that we're pulling
for each other. When Richie won I couldn't jump up and down [because] I
was strapped in the Funny Car, and when Tony won, we were all happy for
him. To get to share the podium with two teammates up here is just an
amazing culmination to the day."

Joey Saldana drove his No. 9 Kasey Kahne Racing sprint car to two
Top-five finishes in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series season finale
events at The Dirt Track @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend.
Saldana's consistent performance throughout the year earned him
third-place in the final World of Outlaws Sprint Series points
standings. |
Saldana Closes Season Third in WoO Sprint Championship
StandingsTeam Mopar wrapped up the 2006 World of Outlaws Sprint Series season at
The Dirt Track @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend, coming away
from the event with four Top-five finishes. Joey Saldana and the
No. 9 Kasey Kahne Racing team won Friday's second heat race en route to a
fifth-place finish in the A-main. In the Saturday event, Saldana battled
his way to the front in the A-main, capping the weekend with a
fourth-place finish. Saldana finished the season ranked third in the World
of Outlaws Sprint Series championship.
Paul McMahan and the No. 20 Tony Stewart Motorsports team took
the checkered flag in fourth on Friday night to lock it into the dash
event in Saturday's A-main event finale. Earning a fourth-place finish in
the dash, McMahan drove to a fifth-place finish in the A-main to end the
team's season.
The No. 5 Forbrook Motorsports team returned to action on Friday and
Saturday, as driver Shane Stewart picked up a sixth-place finish to
start the team's weekend run. An on-track altercation during the B-main
event on Saturday ended the team's run prematurely, with Stewart credited
with a 19th place-finish.
