Racing Radiators
Keeping your engine cool like the pros do!
|
 |

We drag racers can be pretty particular about the
products we use on our racecars. We want performance, quality and
good looks. These are reasons why aluminum radiators are used in
competitive racecars. Traditionally, radiators have been
constructed of copper and brass, which are very efficient for cooling
and dissipating heat quickly.
However,
aluminum is very lightweight, so a radiator can be built to weigh less
than a copper/brass one; and you know how important it is to have
lightweight components in a racecar. Aluminum is also stronger
than brass so the added strength of using aluminum allows the cooling
tubes to be built slightly wider, which adds more cooling surface thus
adding cooling efficiency. Of course a final benefit drag racers
like is the good looks of an aluminum radiator. Most custom made units
will fit in any application and are usually fairly easy to mount.
Where you mount your radiator on your racecar is important but not
necessarily critical.
In
most stock bodied cars the radiator is mounted up front, behind the
grill. This location allows for good airflow when the car is going
down the track. But, since most drag cars are only on the track at
speed for a very short period of time, extra airflow is needed to help
keep those high-horsepower engines cool. High-flow cooling fans
are used in most cases.
These
high-flow fans draw air through the radiator even when the car isn't
moving. These fans are especially important on those race cars
that have the radiator mounted in a low airflow position, such as under
the body of a dragster. Many custom radiators will come with a fan and
sometimes a shroud too. Aftermarket companies make numerous types
and sizes of fans for practically any application. |
